The philosophy of CLM is based on the values, attitudes and practices of the Leadership tradition of St. Vincent de Paul (DePaul University: The Hay Project, Vincent on Leadership) and on the leadership ideals of African traditional communities. Both of these traditions of leadership stress the values of service, honesty and integrity, and the desire to maintain high ethical standards. These values are anchored in a spirituality of care and communion with others for the well-being of the society. CLM seeks to stimulate and develop in learners the creativity needed to enable them to reach their fullest potential through life-long learning skills, innovative and collaborative activities and respect for cultural diversity.

“Tangaza University’s Centre for Leadership and Management (CLM)!”

Established in 2010, the Centre for Leadership and Management (CLM) is one of the Institutes within the School of Arts and Social Sciences (SASS) in Tangaza University (TU). Born of a partnership between TUC and DePaul University, Chicago, USA, CLM’s overriding objective is to   offer courses aimed at creating Africa’s next generation of great leaders.

The purpose of the Centre for Leadership and Management is to prepare leaders for the African society who will uphold in their work places leadership based on the best of traditional African values and the Christian values of service, respect, and integrity. Value-centred leadership creates a public space where ethical standards are openly promoted and sustained.

Leadership and management are not the preserve of business and politics alone but are found in all organizations where people join to form a community with a common vision. Good leaders and managers serve in all occupations ranging from local authorities to health care services to small community projects. The Centre promotes the concept of Servant Leadership where the focus is service, not power or privilege for those who see leadership as a position of status.

Engagement Programs Under CLM

Professional Development Programme For Congregational Leaders (PDCL)

This is an outreach programme under the care of CLM. Its purpose is to provide a local programme for women religious in congregational leadership. The Hilton Foundation has supported the three-year programme in which the sisters attended five modules with Faith and Praxis International and two modules with DePaul University – The Hay Project: Vincent on Leadership. These two institutions provided the experience, knowledge, skills and training necessary to begin a programme run by local sisters in congregational leadership. Some of the sisters who completed the training have become associates of CLM with whom they plan and present the programme.

The Leaders Guild (TLG)

TLG is a leadership development programme under Center for Leadership and Management. It is founded with support from Conrad N. Hilton Foundation & DePaul University, School for New Learning, Chicago,USA.

TLG members include leaders and managers from various sectors of the society, referred to as Associates, and Catholic Religious Sisters and lay graduates of the BA of Liberal Arts with a focus on Leadership and Management offered by the School for New Learning, DePaul University (2007 – 2016) and the Centre for Leadership and Management, Tangaza University (2015 – present), referred to as Alumni. A unique attribute of The Leaders Guild is the partnership between the Catholic religious and leadership professionals to offer leadership development programs and services.

Centre for Leadership and Management Alumni Scholarship Fund (CeLeMaS)

The CLM Alumni Scholarship Fund (CeLeMaS Fund)

Due to the growing number of students and demand in the CLM programmes there was an urgent need to be pragmatic and supplement the available financial support we received from the aforementioned donors. The ever-changing world realities, especially the economic impact of the evolving COVID 19 pandemic is the possibility of non-completion of studies for the ever-increasing number of students who are faced with financial constraints and rely on generous benefactors to fulfill their education goals. It is in this context that The Leaders Guild (TLG), an alumni program that stems from CLM, has purposed to bring together past and current CLM students as well as friends and partners who share the same interest to co-create a sustainable scholarship fund in the spirit of giving back to the society through CLM (Centre for Leadership and Management Scholarship Fund – CeLeMaS).

The scholarship will provide tuition fees for undergraduate students who are vulnerable, highly motivated and seeking admission to CLM. The scholarship is competitive and nondiscriminatory, awarded in cognizance of candidates’ financial background, needs, minimum academic merit, and transformational leadership goals.
